Long days, barbecues, watermelon, pool, beach, sun tans – words synonymous with summer fun in the sun. But for some, it could also mean sunburn and dehydration. Daytona Beach is the ultimate summer destination with 23 miles of pristine beaches and outdoor adventures from water sports to oceanfront dining. Check out our summer sun safety tips checklist so you can take advantage of all the great outdoors recreation offered at the Shores Resort & Spa to make the most of your summer.
- Always wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 or higher to guard against both UVA and UVB radiation. Apply 15-20 minutes before heading out in the sun and remember to reapply every 2 hours or after getting wet. Children should wear one with an SPF 50 or higher for extra protection.
- Cover up. In addition to sunscreen, protect your entire body from head to toe by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with at least 99-100% UV protection, and long-sleeve rash guards during sun exposure, especially for little ones.

- Avoid peak sun hours. Since UV radiation is a top contributor to melanoma skin cancer, it is best to avoid being in the sun during peak intensity between 10 am and 2 pm, even on cloudy days. Take this time to book spa appointments and stay indoors before heading out to work on your tan.
- Stay hydrated. Water is your best friend in any season, especially when the temperatures rise. This will prevent heat stroke and dehydration so you can play all day without any repercussions.
- Check your medications. Many prescription medications such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and even face cream with retinol can cause sun sensitivity and sunburn. Make sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist when taking a new medication before heading out in the sun so you can take extra precautions.
- Don't overdo it. Although getting some sun provides our body with vitamin D, it is important to do so in moderation. Research suggests just 10 minutes of sun exposure daily is enough for our daily dose.
You can still have all the fun in the sun if you follow these basic rules of sun safety tips. The Shores Resort & Spa provides everything you need to make sure to stay healthy, from selling sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses in the gift shop to offering beach cabanas and umbrellas by the pool.
